01 · The case
A few years ago, a data center was a warehouse of servers. Today, packed with AI accelerators and drawing power like a small city, it is a supercomputer. The industry has started calling it supercompute, and demand is growing faster than the ground can host it.
SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has laid the problem out plainly. Once word spreads that a supercompute site is coming, land can leap from about $3,000 to $180,000 an acre. Permits and licensing drag on, and even backup generators can mean a wait of around three years. Her summary: We need compute now.
Her answer is orbit. SpaceX owns launch, and that path is well known. Satellites can sit in sunlight almost constantly, radiators face the cold of deep space for free cooling, and SpaceX is building a solar panel factory outside Austin. In her words, The real estate in space is infinite.

03 · Reality check
Today, independent estimates put orbital data centers at several times the cost of ground ones per gigawatt, with figures from roughly 3× to 10×, mostly because of launch. A 2026 U.S. GAO report also flags real engineering and economic barriers.
Still, the race is on. Launch prices keep falling, a startup flew an Nvidia H100 chip into orbit in November 2025, and analysts project a market near $39 billion by 2035.
04 · FAQ
The new name for large AI data centers: facilities packed with accelerators that draw as much power as a small city and work like one giant supercomputer.
Supporters point to limits on the ground: rising land prices, slow permits, long waits for power, and heavy cooling. In orbit, satellites can sit in near-constant sunlight and use radiators that face the cold of deep space.
Not yet. Independent analyses suggest it costs several times more per gigawatt today, mostly because of launch. The bet is that falling launch costs change the math.
